A new exhibition of artworks from late multimedia artist Lucienne Bloch (1909-1999) debuted at the Ann Foxworthy Gallery (located at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria) on Oct. 11 and is scheduled to remain on display through Nov. 24. The exhibit was co-curated by gallery director Laura-Susan Thomas and Jill Thayer, a fine arts professor at Hancock.

“The exceptional legacy of Lucienne Bloch includes her work as a muralist, sculptor, glass designer, advocate, political activist, educator, and illustrator,” Thomas said in press materials. “Her contributions span over the last century as her multimedia talent crossed cultural boundaries.”

Part of the exhibit features personal photographs Bloch took during the 1930s, including photos of her peers and close friends Frida Kahlo (pictured, center) and Diego Rivera (pictured, right). On Nov. 4, Bloch’s granddaughter, Lucienne Allen, will host a special in-person discussion at the gallery, where she will share stories about her grandmother’s career and friendships with Kahlo and Rivera. The event will start at 6 p.m. and will also be livestreamed for those who cannot attend.
