Santa Ynez Valley businesses encouraged to participate in 12th annual Scarecrow Fest

By Caleb Wiseblood

Entry forms to participate in Solvang’s 12th annual Scarecrow Fest are due by Friday, Sept. 17. Application materials to join the Santa Ynez Valley-wide initiative are available at the Solvang Chamber of Commerce, located at 485 Alisal Road, suite 245, Solvang. Throughout the month of October, participating businesses and organizations will create their own unique scarecrows to be displayed outside storefronts and at other locations.

The public will be invited to vote for their favorite scarecrows online at syvscarecrows.com throughout the contest, which concludes on Halloween night. Winners in six different categories (Best Scarecrow Photo Opp, Best Use of Recycled Materials, Best Use of Business Theme, Most Danish, Most Humorous, and Spookiest) will be chosen. One ultimate winner will also be determined as Best Solvang Scarecrow, which will receive the contest’s traditional handcrafted trophy, The Harvest Cup, created by blacksmith Hans Duus. The winning business in this final category will be able to keep and display the trophy until the conclusion of next year’s contest.

Businesses and organizations in other Santa Ynez Valley towns besides Solvang are also encouraged to participate in the contest, Tracy Beard, executive director of the Solvang Chamber of Commerce, explained in press materials.

“The more each town gets into this, the better the experience for both our locals and visitors, whose community involvement and visits, respectively, benefit the economy of the entire valley,” Beard said in a statement.
