Santa Maria introduces 'Talking in the Library'

A series of 17 short videos—in English and Spanish, featuring patrons of the Santa Maria Public Library discussing their experiences using the modern library system—are now posted online.

The library users are featured in a new social media campaign to tell others in local communities the many ways that they find the library useful. The videos were produced under a grant from the Santa Barbara Foundation to the Santa Maria Library Foundation. The videos can be viewed on the library’s Facebook page as well as at librarystories.org, the library’s webpage, and on the City’s Community TV Channel 25 (Comcast). The local Univision station will use the Spanish language TV and radio spots as well. While many of the patrons and staff were interviewed for the videos by producer Larry Nimmer, patrons also recorded selfie videos on a special video kiosk developed by Library Stories.

Nimmer of librarystories.org, a “friends-of-the-library” organization that helps libraries promote services, developed the video campaign. In the videos, patrons talk about library services they love, such as mobile hotspot devices checkout, homework help, art programs for kids and seniors, opera programs, book club in a bag, job search resources, automatic renewal, and more.

The libraries featured in the campaign are the Santa Maria Public Library and its branches in Orcutt, Guadalupe, Los Alamos, and Cuyama. For more information contact Mary Housel, city librarian, at (805) 925-0994, Ext. 2322, or mhousel@cityofsantamaria.org.
