Santa Maria nonprofits vandalized, items pilfered; community comes forward with support

On the last Friday night of August, on the eve of Transitions-Mental Health Association’s Growing Grounds Gallery art show Local Women of Art, someone threw a large stone through the window of the front door smashing it along with a large jewelry case housing more than $1,000 in member-created jewelry, explained Gallery Director Robert Silverman. The money lost from the jewelry was quickly covered in donations and proceeds made from sales at the art event that night, Silverman said, but the organization is still in need of assistance in covering the cost of repairs for the double-paned door and the large jewelry case.

A little more than two weeks later, during the evening of Sept. 12, someone broke into and vandalized the Camp Fire Cabin located at the historical Buena Vista Park near downtown Santa Maria. The organization has already received donations at campfirecentralcoast.org and is grateful for more, according to a release issued by Camp Fire Central Coast of California. A special cleanup event is scheduled for from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Camp Fire Cabin, 833 S. Pine St., Santa Maria.

Those interested in reaching Camp Fire Central Coast further can call 773-5126. Transitions Mental Health Association can be contacted at 928-0139 or through t-mha.org.
